Overview
Gokō Shrine on Naoshima Island offers a mystical experience where modern art and history beautifully intertwine against the backdrop of the breathtaking Seto Inland Sea.
As part of the Benesse Art Site Naoshima's "Home Project," the shrine has been renovated by contemporary artists, creating a unique space where modern art and history harmoniously coexist. The above-ground main hall preserves traditional shrine architecture, yet incorporates a contemporary interpretation. The transparent glass staircase connecting the main hall to the underground stone chamber is particularly striking—a mystical passageway, seemingly for the gods themselves, creating a fantastical space that links the earth above and below.
The stone chamber, once the site of Gokō Shrine's original hall, provides spectacular views of the Seto Inland Sea. This special space, a captivating blend of modern art, history, and nature, invites quiet contemplation and relaxation.
Gokō Shrine is a must-see destination on Naoshima. It offers an unforgettable experience where modern art, history, and nature converge.
Please note that Gokō Shrine is part of the "Home Project" and an admission fee applies. We ask that visitors observe quiet contemplation and respect the surrounding environment.
