Overview

Jigishima Shrine sits on a coastal rock formation overlooking Harima Nada, in Sakoshi, Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. Historically known as "Ibo no Ura," the shrine is said to be where Empress Jingu prayed for victory during her conquest of Silla. For generations, it has been believed to offer blessings for safe voyages, successful fishing, protection from maritime disasters, warding off evil, and business prosperity. The vermillion torii gate facing the sea is particularly photogenic and attracts many visitors. This gate is a symbol of the shrine, its vibrant red contrasting beautifully with the blue of the sea, captivating all who visit. Right beside the torii gate rests a sacred mirror, said to have been used by Empress Jingu during her Silla expedition. The main shrine building was reconstructed during the Edo period and retains a historical charm. Inside, deities such as Empress Jingu and Emperor Ojin are enshrined, creating a sacred atmosphere. Surrounding Jigishima Shrine are historical sites and tourist spots such as Sakoshi Port and the ruins of Sakoshi Castle. Sakoshi Port is an old fishing town that retains its traditional charm. The ruins of Sakoshi Castle, built during the Warring States period, feature remnants of its stone walls and moats. Jigishima Shrine is a wonderful place where history, nature, and faith blend harmoniously. Known as a power spot, it offers visitors a sense of peace and rejuvenation. We highly recommend visiting and experiencing its unique charm for yourself.
