A shrine with approximately 2000 years of history, the Ichinomiya (most important shrine) of Kii Province. It enshrines Isotake-no-kami, the god of forestry, and boasts a towering cedar tree within its grounds.
Itaki-so Shrine is a tranquil and historic shrine located in the outskirts of Wakayama City. As the former Ichinomiya of Kii Province, it boasts a history spanning approximately 2000 years, enshrining Isotake-no-kami, known as the god of forestry. While the founding date is unknown, it is said to have been originally located at the site of the present-day Jizen-gu and Kuni-kage-gu shrines. A shrine building commemorating its relocation to the present site in 715 AD (Wadō 6) still stands. A giant cedar tree dominates the grounds, captivating visitors with its sacred atmosphere. Every April, the "Kigi Matsuri" (Tree Festival) is held to express gratitude for the blessings of the trees. Highlights include chainsaw art creations by Kei-ji Jyosho, a world chainsaw art champion, who donates zodiac-themed sculptures. Itaki-so Shrine, while steeped in history and tranquility, actively embraces new initiatives, including collaborations with contemporary art. Be sure to visit!
