A park located on a hilltop offering panoramic views of Matsushima Bay. In spring, it's an unparalleled cherry blossom viewing spot with breathtaking scenery of cherry blossoms and the bay.
Saigyō-Modoshi-no-Matsu Park is located on a hilltop overlooking Matsushima Bay in Matsushima-machi, Miyagi Prefecture. The park's name originates from a legend about Saigyō Hōshi, a poet-priest from the Kamakura period. Legend says that while traveling, he stopped at this location and engaged in a Zen riddle with a child under a large pine tree. However, Saigyō Hōshi was unable to answer the child's riddle and is said to have given up his journey to Matsushima. Within the park stands a large pine tree called "Saigyō-Modoshi-no-Matsu" (Saigyō's Return Pine), named after this legend. This pine tree serves as a symbolic landmark of the park, exuding an air of age and history. From the park, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Matsushima Bay. Especially in spring, approximately 260 cherry trees bloom, creating a stunning contrast with the blue sea, forming a breathtaking spectacle. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the magnificent Matsushima Bay. This is a place where you can fully appreciate the beautiful scenery of Matsushima, including the islands scattered across Matsushima Bay and the distant view of Kankazan Island. While it's crowded with tourists during cherry blossom season, the park offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere in other seasons, allowing you to enjoy nature's serenity. Saigyō-Modoshi-no-Matsu Park is an indispensable spot for your Matsushima sightseeing experience, harmoniously blending history and nature.
