Oshira-sama's Weeping Cherry Tree, located in Akatsuka, Yokobori, Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture, is a roughly 200-year-old weeping cherry tree situated within the grounds of Hakusan Shrine. The shrine is affectionately known as "Oshira-sama" by local residents, hence the name of the cherry tree. Designated as a natural monument of Yuzawa City in 2007, it was also selected for the Tohoku Yume no Sakura Kaido (Tohoku Dream Cherry Blossom Road) in 2000 and Akita Prefecture's 100 Best Landscapes in 2009 – a true treasure of the region. This impressive tree boasts a height of 10 meters and a spread of 20 meters, making it one of the largest in the prefecture. Its stunning cascading branches and the profusion of pink blossoms at full bloom captivate visitors. The peak blooming season is from late April to early May, during which time nighttime illuminations transform the scene. The illuminated cherry tree is breathtakingly beautiful, like a pink cloud floating in the night sky, creating a magical atmosphere. Since Oshira-sama's Weeping Cherry Tree is located within the grounds of Hakusan Shrine, you can enjoy the ambiance of the shrine along with the cherry blossoms.
