Overview

Mount Kurikoma is a 1,626-meter-high independent peak spanning Miyagi, Iwate, and Akita prefectures. Iwakagami-hira, on the Miyagi side, represents a prime sightseeing area of Mount Kurikoma. It's home to a wealth of alpine plants and is famous for its spectacular autumn leaves. Peak foliage season is from late September to early October. Mount Kurikoma is an ideal destination for hikers and mountaineers. From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of mountains such as Mount Gassan, Mount Chokai, the Zaō mountain range, Mount Komagatake, and Mount Hayachine, extending even to the distant Pacific Ocean. Nine trails cater to various skill levels, from beginner-friendly paths to challenging routes for experienced climbers. Spring brings a vibrant display of alpine flora, including daylilies (nikkoukisuge) and skunk cabbage (mizubasho). In autumn, the beech and maple trees paint the mountain in fiery reds and yellows, creating a breathtaking spectacle known as the "God's Carpet." Numerous hot springs, such as Sugawakogen Onsen, Koma no Yu Onsen, and Yuhama Onsen, surround Mount Kurikoma, offering a relaxing respite after a day of hiking. Mount Kurikoma is a captivating destination offering stunning seasonal landscapes, along with various activities such as mountaineering, hiking, and onsen relaxation.
