The Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art is a public museum located in Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It houses a significant collection of works by Yasuo Kaguya, a renowned painter known for his Siberian series, which depict his experiences as a prisoner of war in Siberia. Kaguya, a native of Yamaguchi Prefecture, continued to create art throughout his Siberian imprisonment (from 1945 onwards), expressing the horrors of war alongside the resilience and hope of the human spirit. The museum possesses approximately 1,000 works, many of which are on public display, including his masterpiece, the Siberian series. This series, primarily monochrome paintings, vividly portrays the harsh conditions, the unforgiving natural environment, and the emotional transformations experienced during his captivity. These works serve as a testament to the memories of war and inspire reflection on the importance of peace. Beyond Kaguya's works, the museum showcases a diverse range of art from various periods and styles, including pieces by Sesshu (associated with the Chōshū clan), Yoshikai Kano, and postwar artist Kazusaku Kobayashi. Designed by Kito Azu Architectural Design Office, the museum building opened in 1979. It's situated in an educational district alongside the Yamaguchi Prefectural Library, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Government Building, and the Yamaguchi Xavier Memorial Cathedral.
