A national Important Cultural Property where you can experience the atmosphere of a Taisho-era assembly hall.
The Yamaguchi Prefectural Government Archives, located in Takimachi, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is a historical building designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It comprises two buildings: the former Yamaguchi Prefectural Government Office and the former Prefectural Assembly Hall. Construction on both began in 1913 (Taisho 2) and was completed in 1916 (Taisho 5). The design was overseen by Raiō Tsumaki, who later worked on the National Diet Building, with Takeuchi Goi and Ookuma Kihune as the primary architects. The buildings beautifully exemplify Taisho architecture, a fusion of Western and Japanese styles. The imposing brick structure, spacious assembly hall, and the overall atmosphere allow you to vividly imagine the debates that once took place within these walls. The former prefectural government office now houses exhibits on the former governor's office and general information about the prefecture. The former assembly hall, besides its historical exhibits, also functions as a multipurpose hall called "Yume Koryu Hall" (Dream Exchange Hall), available for rentals. The former assembly member's waiting rooms have been transformed into a public space for community interaction known as "Yamaguchi Kirara Club". The Yamaguchi Prefectural Government Archives offers a valuable opportunity to learn about Yamaguchi's history and culture. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the past and experience a tangible connection to Yamaguchi's rich heritage.
