An art museum showcasing photographs, art, and historical materials, primarily featuring the works of photographer Tadahiko Hayashi. It forms a cultural zone in Shunan City, along with the adjacent Shunan City Cultural Hall.
The Shunan City Art Museum, located in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, opened on September 4, 1995. It primarily showcases photographs, art, and historical materials, centering around the works of Tadahiko Hayashi, a photographer from Shunan City (formerly Tokuyama City). The museum forms a cultural zone in Shunan City, together with the adjacent Shunan City Cultural Hall. The museum's permanent exhibition halls feature works by Hayashi, along with pieces by artists with ties to Tokuyama, such as Susumu Miyazaki, Ryuichi Kishida, and Michio Mado. A Tokuyama history corner presents exhibits on the Tokuyama Domain and the Tokuyama air raid, offering insights into the history and culture of Shunan City. The Tadahiko Hayashi Award, presented annually, celebrates Hayashi's lifelong dedication to fostering amateur photographers. It supports amateur photographers by selecting photography exhibitions and publications for the award. Winners are given opportunities to hold exhibitions in Tokyo and Shunan City (at the Shunan City Art Museum), and their winning works are permanently preserved at the museum. The Shunan City Art Museum not only conveys the culture of Shunan City through photography and art but also serves as a hub for cultural activities for local residents by hosting various events and special exhibitions.
