Overview

Hotai-no-taki Waterfall is a majestic waterfall in Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. The sight of abundant water cascading down from Mount Chokai is truly breathtaking. The area around the waterfall basin is well-maintained, with walking paths and a campsite, allowing visitors to fully enjoy nature. Upstream, you'll find Tamada Valley, boasting a beautiful landscape of streams and massive rocks. A walk along the former forest railway track offers a chance to experience both the grandeur of nature and the history of human activity. A sad legend is associated with Hotai-no-taki. Long ago, a beautiful woman lived in this area. She attempted to elope with her lover, but was pursued and, tragically, threw herself into the waterfall basin. Since then, the waterfall has been called "Hotai-no-taki." Hotai-no-taki Waterfall is a place of magnificent nature and romantic, tragic legend. We highly recommend a visit.
