A shrine revered as the guardian deity of onmyoji. Smiling komainu (lion-dog statues) greet you at the entrance.
Chintaku Reifu Shrine was founded in the early Heian period (800s) by imperial order of Emperor Kanmu. It enshrines Imperial Princess Inoue (the Empress of Emperor Konin and daughter of Emperor Shomu), and her son, Prince Oto, who were unjustly imprisoned and passed away during the Nara period. They are enshrined as the guardian deities of Nara-machi. Chintaku Reifu Shrine is also known as a sacred altar for onmyoji, and enshrines Amenominakanushi-no-kami, the god of the creation of heaven and earth. In the early modern period, it became associated with Myoken Bosatsu, a bodhisattva representing the North Star, and continues to receive many visitors today. Smiling komainu greet visitors at the entrance. At the base of the komainu, red strings are tied by visitors praying for the return of runaways, matchmaking, and business prosperity—a practice known as "Komainu no Ashi-dome Kigan" (Komainu Foot-Stopping Prayer). Chintaku Reifu Shrine is also known for its vibrant seasonal flowers, including cherry blossoms and peonies. In spring, weeping cherry trees bloom, painting the shrine grounds in shades of pink. The beautifully designed seasonal goshuin (temple seals) are also popular, attracting many visitors. Chintaku Reifu Shrine offers a tranquil and serene space surrounded by history and nature. It's the perfect place for those seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
