A historic shrine founded in the early Heian period, known for its blessings in matchmaking.
Goryo Shrine is a shrine founded by imperial order of Emperor Kanmu in the early Heian period. It is enshrined as the guardian deity of Nara-machi. Initially, it was located in front of the south gate of Gango-ji Temple, an area known as Inoue-cho. However, it was destroyed by fire during the peasant uprising of 1451 (Hōtoku 3) that burned down Gango-ji Temple. It was later relocated to its present location. Goryo Shrine was built to console the spirits of Princess Inoue and Prince Toto, her son. Within the grounds, you'll find the main shrine dedicated to these two deities, as well as subsidiary shrines: the Success-Inviting Inari Shrine (Shusse Inari Jinja), the Purification Gate Shrine (Harai-do Jinja), Wakamiya Shrine, and Mizuhiro Shrine. The Success-Inviting Inari Shrine is particularly known for its blessings in matchmaking, attracting many worshippers. At the base of the komainu (lion-dog statues) flanking the south gate, you'll find red strings tied by visitors praying for the return of runaways, matchmaking, or business prosperity. This is a unique sight, characteristic of Goryo Shrine. Goryo Shrine is a captivating tourist spot where history, nature, and faith harmoniously blend. The grounds bloom with cherry blossoms and peonies throughout the seasons, and the beautifully designed seasonal goshuin (temple seals) are also a popular draw. Why not visit Goryo Shrine to experience its history, faith, and find a moment of peace?
