A temple where you can experience history and culture, featuring nationally designated Important Cultural Properties (statues of Buddha) and a Japanese garden created from the late Heian to early Kamakura periods.
Makaya-ji Temple is a historic temple founded in 726 by Gyoki. Initially named "Shindachi-ji Temple," it later became known as "Makaya-ji Temple." The principal image of the temple is the Shokanzeon Bosatsu statue, which is a hidden Buddha image. Other important statues, including those of Senju Kannon and Fudo Myoo, are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The temple boasts a Japanese garden. During the construction of the Tomei Expressway, an engineer discovered the garden buried within the temple grounds. A scholarly investigation in 1968 revealed its full extent. This pond-style garden, created from the late Heian to early Kamakura periods, allows visitors to feel the weight of history in its serene atmosphere. Enjoy the beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons during a leisurely stroll.
