A historic temple housing numerous precious Buddhist statues and structures, including three national treasure statues.
Katsutsuji Temple, located in Yugawa Village, Kawanuma District, Fukushima Prefecture, is a temple where you can experience history and culture. Deeply connected to Tokui-shoin, a Buddhist monk of the Hossō sect during the Heian period, it boasts numerous valuable cultural assets, including three national treasure Buddhist statues and the Yakushi-do hall, an Important Cultural Property. In particular, the national treasure seated statue of Yakushi Nyorai captivates visitors with its graceful beauty and overwhelming presence. This statue, crafted using the yosegi-zukuri technique (a type of wood joinery) and coated with lacquered gold leaf, depicts Yakushi Nyorai seated on a lotus throne with a serene expression. A mandorla (back halo) further enhances its magnificence. The hall also houses twelve guardian deity statues (Junishijinzō), each with unique expressions and poses, protecting Yakushi Nyorai. These statues, all from the Kamakura period, showcase the high skill and artistry of the Buddhist sculptors of that era. Katsutsuji Temple offers not only a journey through history and culture but also a chance to refresh your mind and body by strolling through its tranquil grounds. The beautiful scenery throughout the year is another of its charms, particularly in autumn when the vibrant red and yellow leaves create a magical atmosphere. When visiting Fukushima Prefecture, be sure to visit Katsutsuji Temple.
