A shrine boasting historical structures, including a National Treasure main hall (honden) and an Important Cultural Property gate (roumon).
Ohno Shrine, located in Ritto City, Shiga Prefecture, is known as the god of scholarship as Sugawara Michizane is the chief deity. While the founding date is unknown, classical texts and traditions suggest the shrine existed before 882. The grounds are filled with historically significant structures such as the gate (roumon, Important Cultural Property) and the three shrines (Sannosha, Izumo Shrine, a tangible cultural property of Ritto City). The National Treasure main hall (honden), a Kamakura-period structure, is breathtaking in its imposing architecture. The Important Cultural Property gate (roumon), built in the early Kamakura period while retaining the style of the late Heian period, enhances the shrine's grandeur. The three shrines (Izumo Shrine) within the grounds are also designated as a tangible cultural property of Ritto City, offering a palpable sense of history. Ohno Shrine also boasts magnificent scenery with Mount Kinsho as a backdrop. Mount Kinsho has long been revered as a sacred mountain, offering panoramic views of Lake Biwa and the surrounding mountains from its summit. Ohno Shrine is a peaceful place surrounded by history and nature. Whether praying to Sugawara Michizane, the god of scholarship, admiring historical buildings, or enjoying the views of Mount Kinsho, there's something for everyone. We highly recommend a visit.
