Overview

Rokusonou Jinja Shrine is a historic shrine built in the Heian period, enshrining Minamoto no Tsunekiyo, the ancestor of the Seiwa Genji clan. Tsunekiyo, called "Rokusonou" (Sixth Grandson) because he was the sixth-generation descendant of Emperor Seiwa, his descendants built a powerful military presence in later Japanese history. The shrine's founding began when his son, Minamoto no Mitsunaka, enshrined his father according to Tsunekiyo's will. The shrine prospered alongside the Genji clan's rise, and its current main hall was rebuilt during the Edo period thanks to the efforts of Tokugawa Mitsukuni. Rokusonou Jinja Shrine boasts serene grounds and beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons. In spring, the cherry blossom trees burst into bloom, painting the grounds in pink. Shinryuu Pond exudes a calm, mystical atmosphere, soothing visitors' hearts. The shrine's main hall is designated as a tangible cultural property of Kyoto City, a testament to its historical significance. You can admire its exquisite craftsmanship, including the main hall, worship hall, Karamon gate, and cloisters. Rokusonou Jinja Shrine is recommended for history buffs, nature lovers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat. Visit Rokusonou Jinja Shrine to experience its rich history and natural beauty.
