The oldest Hachiman Shrine in the Kanto region! A power spot enveloped in history and nature!
Daiho Hachiman-gu Shrine is a historic shrine located in Shimotsuma City, Ibaraki Prefecture, known as the oldest Hachiman shrine in the Kanto region. Its founding dates back to 701 AD, when Fujiwara no Tokitada enshrined a sacred object from Usa Hachiman-gu Shrine in Chikuzen. Records indicate that Minamoto no Yoritomo visited the shrine during the Kamakura period to pray for victory in battle, showcasing its long history of local faith. The grounds boast various highlights, including the 'Daiho Hachiman-gu Main Hall,' a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Rebuilt in 1577 by the Shimotsuma castle lord, Tagaya Takatsune (Shigemune), the hall strongly reflects the local characteristics of the Momoyama period. Its distinctive three-bay, gabled style, tall structure, and thick pillars exude a sense of weight and grandeur. The intricate carvings and decorations demonstrate the exceptional craftsmanship of the time. The shrine grounds also feature numerous subsidiary shrines, each offering its own blessings. For example, the 'Enkiri Inari Shrine' is associated with severing bad relationships and finding new love, while the 'Daiho Tenmangu Shrine' is dedicated to the god of scholarship. Visiting these shrines and making wishes to their respective deities is highly recommended. In June, the 'Hydrangea Festival' takes place, transforming the grounds into a vibrant spectacle of colorful hydrangeas. During the festival, events such as the Yabusame (mounted archery) ceremony and a traditional tea ceremony ('node') attract large crowds. The Yabusame ceremony, where priests shoot arrows from horseback, is a breathtaking traditional ritual. The node offers a chance to enjoy tea and sweets. Daiho Hachiman-gu Shrine is also renowned as a power spot surrounded by history and nature, attracting numerous visitors. Towering ancient trees, including a giant ginkgo tree over 100 years old and a giant pine tree said to be inhabited by a deity, stand majestically on the grounds, creating a sacred atmosphere of tranquility. The shrine offers beautiful seasonal views, from cherry blossoms in spring to autumn foliage. Daiho Hachiman-gu Shrine is a captivating tourist destination where history, culture, nature, and faith converge. Come and experience its charm for yourself!
