Overview

Kosuge no Sato is an ancient, traditional village located in Oaza Mizuho, Iiyama City, Nagano Prefecture. Historically known as "Kosugego" and "Kosugesho," it was later called "Kosugemura" in the modern era. Recently, it has adopted the name "Kosuge no Sato." Along with Kosugeyama mountain (home to Kosuge Shrine) and the neighboring Kobe, Sekizawa, and Harita districts, it's designated as an Important Cultural Landscape under the Cultural Properties Protection Law, known as the "Cultural Landscape of Kosuge no Sato and Kosugeyama." Today, 153 people live in 60 households, preserving their traditional way of life while coexisting harmoniously with nature. The charm of Kosuge no Sato lies in its breathtaking scenery. The village, centered around a straight path leading to Kosuge Shrine, boasts traditional houses lining the street, creating a scene that feels like stepping back in time. This path is locally known as "Kaido." Houses are arranged in terraces, with stone walls (ishigaki) made of andesite from Kosugeyama at each level. This stonework technique, honed over centuries, symbolizes the traditional architecture of Kosuge no Sato. Kosuge no Sato also maintains age-old customs, including "kawa," water storage ponds utilizing spring water from the mountains, and "otenma," a collaborative system for maintaining irrigation channels. 'Kawa' is used for washing and snow melting, while 'otenma' is managed by the village community, highlighting the vital role of water management in the lives of Kosuge no Sato's residents. These traditional lifestyles demonstrate a deep connection between the people and nature, representing a precious cultural heritage fading in modern society. Kosuge no Sato is a true embodiment of the "original Japanese landscape," where history, tradition, and nature harmonize. Surrounded by tranquility, you can enjoy a relaxing time. Consider exploring Kosuge Shrine, the surrounding nature, or interacting with the locals for a truly unique and memorable experience.
