Overview

The Sanada Residence, built in the late 18th century, was constructed by Sanada Yukinori, the ninth feudal lord of Matsushiro Domain, as a retirement villa for his mother. This Edo-period daimyo mansion retains its original structure and atmosphere, offering a glimpse into the lives of the samurai class. Entering through the grand gate and strolling along the long stone path, you'll find yourself standing before a majestic residence. The interior has been meticulously restored to its original state, with period furnishings providing a tangible sense of daily life during that era. The garden within the residence is a particularly enchanting feature, offering breathtaking views throughout the year. In spring, cherry blossoms paint the landscape; in early summer, the greenery bursts with vibrancy; autumn brings a stunning display of autumn leaves; and winter blankets the scene in a serene layer of snow, making it a place of tranquil beauty and escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Adjacent to the Sanada Residence is the Sanada Treasure Museum, showcasing family heirlooms including weaponry, household goods, and calligraphy. Visiting both the Sanada Residence and the museum provides a comprehensive understanding of the Sanada family's rich history and culture. The Sanada Residence offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in history and culture while finding solace in its peaceful atmosphere. We highly recommend a visit.
