Overview

Aekuni Shrine, located in Iga City, Mie Prefecture, has been an object of deep faith as the Ichinomiya of Iga Province for centuries. Its founding is said to date back to 658 AD (during the reign of Empress Saimei), giving it a history spanning over 1300 years. The principal deity is Ōhiko-no-mikoto, with associated deities Wakonago-no-mikoto and Kanayama Hime-no-mikoto. The shrine grounds are serene and exude a solemn atmosphere that speaks to their rich history. The kagura hall, haiden (worship hall), and honden (main shrine) all feature historically significant carvings and ornamentation. For generations, Aekuni Shrine has hosted a festival known as the "Kuroto Matsuri." This festival is believed to have been a private affair of the Hattori clan, who later produced the legendary ninja Hattori Hanzo—a fascinating historical connection that sparks curiosity about the reality of ninjas. Furthermore, Aekuni Shrine offers a unique glimpse into the atmosphere of a ninja village. On the premises, you'll find a ninja house and a museum showcasing ninja tools and artifacts. Aekuni Shrine is a place brimming with history and mystery. Why not take a stroll through its tranquil grounds and immerse yourself in the weight of its ancient past?
