An octagonal kofun exuding a solemn atmosphere, where Emperor Tenmu and Empress Jito rest.
The Tenmu and Jito Imperial Mausoleum (Noguchi Royal Tomb Kofun) is a kofun located in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture. Designated by the Imperial Household Agency as the burial place of Emperor Tenmu (the 40th emperor) and Empress Jito (the 41st emperor), it's an octagonal mound built in the late 7th century during the Asuka period. It's unusual for an imperial mausoleum as the occupants have been identified. Records from a robbery during the Kamakura period also add to its historical significance. Emperor Tenmu won the Jinshin War and became the first Emperor of Japan. Empress Jito, his wife, was deeply involved in politics as his Empress and later as Empress Regnant. Both played pivotal roles in Japanese history. The mausoleum is built on a small hill, with a stone staircase leading up to a place of worship. A very solemn atmosphere prevails, and you can feel the weight of history in the silence. The surrounding area is rich with Asuka-era ruins and kofun, making it ideal for historical exploration. The Tenmu and Jito Imperial Mausoleum is a must-see for history buffs. It's a place to reflect on the achievements of Emperor Tenmu and Empress Jito, and contemplate Japanese history.
