Overview

Ikejima is a small island with a circumference of about 7km, located at the southern tip of Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture. It once flourished as a coal island, its entire landscape bustling with coal mining activity. At its peak, the population exceeded 2,000, with numerous coal mining facilities built across the island, creating a vibrant atmosphere. However, with the decline of the coal industry in the 1970s, many islanders left, leaving it a quiet island with a population of about 100 today. The island retains remnants of its former bustling coal mining past, along with villages showcasing a Showa-retro atmosphere. Old houses where coal miners once lived still stand, offering a glimpse into their lives. These retro scenes have recently attracted attention, drawing numerous photographers and tourists. The island also features a museum where you can learn about the history of coal mining, and restaurants where you can enjoy meals overlooking the beautiful sea. Ikejima is also blessed with abundant nature. A cycling course encircles the island, allowing for a leisurely exploration. The coastline boasts white sandy beaches, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The sea is exceptionally clear, teeming with diverse marine life, making it a popular diving spot. Recommended for those seeking a relaxing getaway on a tranquil island. Ikejima is an island where you can experience both rich nature and a palpable sense of history.
