One of the oldest keyhole-shaped tumuli in eastern Japan, offering breathtaking spring views of approximately 2,000 cherry blossoms.
Kofunyama Kofun is a keyhole-shaped tumulus located in Namoyanagi, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Built sometime between the late 3rd and mid-4th centuries, it's renowned as one of the oldest kofun in eastern Japan and is designated as a National Historic Site. Situated atop a mountain at an altitude of approximately 650 meters, it boasts spectacular views of Matsumoto city and the Northern Alps. Approximately 2,000 cherry trees, including Someiyoshino and Yaezakura varieties, surround the kofun, creating a vibrant spectacle during springtime, drawing many hanami (cherry blossom viewing) enthusiasts. The view of the cherry blossoms from the kofun is truly awe-inspiring. Kofunyama Kofun is a beloved destination for its blend of history and nature. Excavations of the stone chamber within the kofun have unearthed valuable artifacts, including a four-animal mirror inscribed with the characters "Kamigata Sakkyo," bronze arrowheads, iron swords, and magatama (curved jade jewels). These artifacts are on display at the Matsumoto City Archaeological Museum. We highly recommend visiting the museum after exploring the kofun for a deeper understanding of its history and culture. Kofunyama Kofun is a perfect spot for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Create unforgettable memories while immersing yourselves in the majestic scenery and rich history.
