Overview
The former Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Nagasaki Branch, designed by architect Kikutarō Shimoda, who was active during the Meiji period, is a historically significant building designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Established in 1892 and completed in 1904, it was the only foreign bank west of Kobe at the time, primarily engaged in foreign exchange and trading currencies in London, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
Today, the building serves as a memorial hall, showcasing exhibits that recreate the bank's operations and the relationship between Sun Yat-sen and Shōkichi Umeya.
The first floor preserves the original counters where banking transactions took place, and it also functions as a multi-purpose hall with a capacity of 100 people. The second and third floors are dedicated to the museum, featuring exhibits on the Nagasaki-Shanghai shipping route, the history of Nagasaki Port, the history of Nagasaki's Chinese community, Kikutarō Shimoda, and the relationship between Sun Yat-sen, Nagasaki, and Shōkichi Umeya.
A visit to this memorial hall provides a deeper understanding of Nagasaki's international atmosphere and its rich history and culture during that era. The building's beautiful architectural style also makes it appealing to those interested in architectural history.
