Experience the atmosphere of a historic Western-style building where Einstein once stayed!
The Former Mojiko Mitsui Club was built in 1921 (Taisho 10) as a social club for the Mitsui Bussan Mojiko branch. Relocated from Tanimachi, Mojiko-ku, to the Mojiko Retro area, it is now designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. At that time, Mojiko Port flourished as a vibrant international trading port, attracting many foreigners. The Former Mojiko Mitsui Club served as a social hub, symbolizing the splendor of Mojiko Port, entertaining numerous guests. Particularly famous is the fact that Albert Einstein and his wife stayed there for five days in 1922 (Taisho 11). During his visit to Japan, Einstein visited not only major cities like Tokyo and Kyoto but also Mojiko Port. It is said that the Einsteins experienced Japanese culture and scenery at the Former Mojiko Mitsui Club. Today, the Former Mojiko Mitsui Club houses the "Einstein Memorial Room," preserving the room where Einstein stayed in its original state. There's also the "Fumiko Hayashi Memorial Room," showcasing materials related to Fumiko Hayashi, a female novelist from Mojiko. The Former Mojiko Mitsui Club is not only a place to experience history and culture but also boasts numerous highlights, including beautiful Art Deco interiors and stained glass. Be sure to visit when you're in the Mojiko Retro area. Incidentally, the Former Mojiko Mitsui Club was once named "Montetsukaikan" and owned by the Japanese National Railways (JNR). After the privatization of JNR in 1987, it was donated to Kitakyushu City, resulting in its current form.
