A historic samurai residence where Emperor Meiji once stayed. The harmonious blend of the stately main building and the beautiful Japanese garden is its charm.
The Chofu Mori Residence, located in Soshamachi, Chofu, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is a mansion built in 1903 (Meiji 36) by Motonori Mori, the last lord of the Chofu Domain, upon his return from Tokyo. It holds historical significance as Emperor Meiji stayed there as a temporary imperial residence shortly before its completion, and that section remains perfectly preserved. The approximately 10,000 square-meter property is enclosed by stone walls and whitewashed walls. The section containing the main building, characteristic of a samurai residence, is elevated from the area beyond the main gate, reflecting a castle-like structure. The main building itself is built in the style of a shoin (study), reflecting its prestigious status. A monument commemorating Emperor Meiji's stay (Mori-ko-tei Kinenhi) stands beside the entrance. A variety of gardens await, including a shoin garden, a pond garden (ike no niwa), and a karesansui (dry landscape) garden, each offering a distinct atmosphere. The shoin garden is seamlessly integrated with the building, featuring a pond, rock formations, and trees, creating a tranquil ambiance. The pond garden features a walking path allowing visitors to leisurely stroll around the central pond. The karesansui garden showcases a serene world depicted through sand and rocks. The Chofu Mori Residence offers stunning views throughout the year. Cherry blossoms abound in spring, lush greenery covers the trees in summer, autumn brings vibrant foliage, and winter offers snowy landscapes. During the tourist season, events such as trying on samurai armor (katsuto) and court lady attire (kanjo-kimono) are also held, offering a chance to experience the lifestyle of that era. The Enmokuan teahouse, built over 110 years ago, has also been relocated to the property and is available for use at a fee. This tatami-mat room offers a captivating view of the garden. Enjoy matcha tea and sweets while relaxing here. The Chofu Mori Residence is a tourist spot where you can relax and experience history and culture. Be sure to visit when you're in Shimonoseki.
