Hakone Daimonjiyaki is one of Hakone's three major festivals, a traditional event that has continued since 1921. On the evening of August 16th, approximately 300 pine torches illuminate a massive 'Dai' (大) character, over 100 meters in both height and width, on the slope of Myōjō-ga-take mountain. The breathtaking sight of the character burning against the night sky is truly unforgettable.
This event has long been cherished as a summer tradition in Hakone. It's said to have originated with those involved in the construction of the Hakone Imperial Villa to celebrate its completion. Since then, it has been passed down through generations of local residents and continues to be celebrated with great fanfare.
On the day of the Hakone Daimonjiyaki, the surrounding area is bustling with activity, featuring various events and food stalls. The view from Myōjō-ga-take is also stunning, and on a clear day, you can even see Mount Fuji. Hakone Daimonjiyaki is more than just an event; it's a precious opportunity to experience Hakone's history, culture, and nature with all five senses. Witness the magnificence of this massive character illuminating Hakone's summer night sky for yourself.
