Experience the abundant nature of Hakone at Japan's first wetland garden. A breathtaking display of seasonal flowers creates a truly peaceful atmosphere.
Hakone Shissei Garden, located in Sengokuhara, Hakone-machi, Kanagawa Prefecture, is Japan's first wetland garden. Opened in 1976, it protects and showcases the precious plants of the Sengokuhara wetland. The garden features approximately 1,500 plant species, primarily wetland plants. The vibrant seasonal flowers create a soothing atmosphere for visitors. Enjoy a variety of blooms, including Mizubashou and Katakuri in spring, Nikko-kisuge and Himeyuri in summer, and Rindou and Oomomiji in autumn. An exhibition room provides information about the flora and fauna of the Sengokuhara wetland, featuring photos and panels. A roughly 15-minute film, "Hakone Shissei Garden: Flowers of the Four Seasons," is also shown. Spring showcases spring flowers, while summer features summer blooms. A gift shop and cafe offer a relaxing space to unwind. The shop sells souvenirs such as original postcards and photo albums, along with mountain plants and carnivorous plants (summer only). A wide variety of plants are also sold during the garden's opening period. Hakone Shissei Garden is a highly recommended destination for experiencing the rich natural beauty of Hakone.
