Overview

Awashima Shrine, located in Bungotakada City, Oita Prefecture, is a nationally rare shrine uniquely built into a sea cave jutting out into the ocean. Historically, it was revered as a deity that healed illnesses in crops and livestock. However, as time passed, it gained popularity as a deity of matchmaking and safe childbirth, particularly among women. This is believed to stem from its seaside location, deeply connecting it to the sea's blessings and people's livelihoods. The shrine's main hall faces the sea, offering a breathtaking view of the expansive ocean. Gazing out from the hall brings a sense of calm, washing away the daily hustle and bustle. Nearby lies "Negai-ishi, Kanae-iwa" (Wishing Stone, Fulfilling Rock), where throwing a stone into the sea is said to grant wishes. People throw stones with hopes for various desires, from successful romances to career advancements. Many legends surround Awashima Shrine. One famous story recounts how, during a past plague, villagers prayed at the shrine, leading to the disease's cessation. This solidified the shrine's reputation as a deity protecting against epidemics. Nestled in a nature-rich environment, Awashima Shrine is ablaze with cherry blossoms in spring, providing a beautiful setting for a tranquil time. Summer allows for enjoying the nearby ocean. Awashima Shrine is known as a power spot, surrounded by history and nature. Be sure to visit!
