Overview
Prefectural Route 11, commonly known as the Yamanami Highway, connects Oita and Kumamoto prefectures and is renowned as one of Kyushu's premier driving routes. Choja-hara in Kokonoe-machi is a particularly popular spot for its breathtaking views of the Kuju mountain range. The grandeur and beauty of the Kuju mountains, as seen from Choja-hara, captivate numerous visitors.
Choja-hara was named in 1925 by Kumahachi Aburaya, a pioneer in Beppu's tourism development, after the local "Asahi Choja" legend. The legend tells of a wealthy man named Asai Nagaharu, known as "Asahi Choja," who lived a life of luxury in this area. During a celebratory event, he devised a game of archery, using a mirror-cake as the target. When he shot an arrow, the mirror-cake transformed into a white bird and flew away. From that point on, the land became barren, incapable of producing rice, leading to the downfall of the Choja family. The people spoke of divine punishment.
From the Choja-hara road marker, you can enjoy not only the magnificent scenery of the Kuju mountain range but also, on clear days, a panoramic view extending to the Aso Five Mountains. The area also offers beautiful seasonal scenery, including Miyama Kirishima azaleas in spring and vibrant autumn foliage. With nearby hot springs and restaurants, it's the perfect rest stop for drivers and motorcyclists.
