A photogenic slope offering stunning views of Nagasaki Port. The beauty of the cobblestone street, especially when wet, evokes the atmosphere of a foreign settlement.
Dondon-zaka is a charming cobblestone slope selected as one of Nagasaki's "13 Scenic Slopes." It offers breathtaking views of Nagasaki Port and is filled with a distinct foreign atmosphere. Located in the quiet residential area of Minamiyamate, near Glover Garden and Oura Cathedral, this narrow, long, and steep slope is so captivating you'll hardly notice the incline. Beautiful red-brick buildings, including the Maria Garden and several other Western-style houses, line both sides of the street, preserving the strong remnants of the foreign settlement era. Along the slope are triangular drainage ditches, ingeniously designed with varying shapes—U-shaped at the top, V-shaped in the middle, and rectangular at the bottom—to regulate the water flow. The slope's name, "Dondon-zaka," comes from the sound of rain rushing down these ditches. From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Nagasaki's unique landscape: a bowl-shaped vista featuring a vast sky, Nagasaki Port, and surrounding mountains. The sunset and night views are exceptionally beautiful, with the Nagasaki Shipyard and the World Heritage Giant Cantilever Crane sparkling under the lights. This hidden gem offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for enjoying the nighttime scenery. Dondon-zaka is a captivating blend of history and nature, a must-see destination during your visit to Nagasaki.
