Once called the "greatest bascule bridge in the Orient," the Chikugo River Shoukaikyou Bridge served as a railway bridge for the former JR Saga Line. Now a revitalized pedestrian walkway, it offers stunning views of the majestic Chikugo River, steeped in history.
The Chikugo River Shoukaikyou Bridge, completed in May 1935, is Japan's oldest existing bascule bridge. Originally a railway bridge for the former JR Saga Line, it connected Okawa City in Fukuoka Prefecture and Morotomi-cho in Saga City, Saga Prefecture, across the Chikugo River. Employing innovative technology for its time, it uses a bascule design—a section of the bridge deck moves vertically—to facilitate boat passage during high tide. Initially slated for demolition after the railway's closure, it was preserved as a pedestrian walkway thanks to strong local support and is now designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Parks at both ends of the bridge feature monuments depicting the bridge in its railway days and preserved signal equipment from the Saga Line. From the bridge, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Chikugo River and its surrounding lush nature. The sunset, painting the sky and river in shades of orange, is particularly captivating. Witnessing the central section of the bridge rise and fall is equally impressive, offering a captivating blend of history and magnificent scenery. The Chikugo River Shoukaikyou Bridge is a precious tourist spot where history and nature harmoniously coexist. Come experience its charm for yourself!
