A precious Machiya-style building from the Meiji period, still actively in use!
The former Morinaga House is one of the seven museums of the Saga City History and Folk Museum. It was once the residence and storehouse of the Morinaga family, who manufactured tobacco under orders from the feudal lord. It's a valuable example of Machiya architecture from the early Meiji period, offering a glimpse into the lives of people then. Today, this historic building is used for various purposes. On the first floor, you'll find a specialty tea shop offering a curated selection of teas in a retro atmosphere. The second floor houses a workshop for Nabeshima-dantsu, a traditional Saga craft. You can observe artisans weaving this beautiful tapestry using traditional techniques. The former Morinaga House offers a relaxing space to immerse yourself in history and culture. Be sure to visit when you're in Saga City! The Saga City History and Folk Museum, which includes the former Morinaga House, hosts various events and exhibitions.
