Experience the history and culture of Saga Prefecture all in one place!
The Saga Prefectural Museum, opened in 1970, is a comprehensive prefectural museum located in Jonai, Saga City, Saga Prefecture, on the former site of Saga Castle's third bailey. It's connected to the adjacent Saga Prefectural Art Museum by a walkway. The museum's theme is "the history and culture of Saga Prefecture," with exhibits covering six fields: natural history, archaeology, history, art, crafts, and folklore. Of particular note are the exhibits showcasing the history and culture of the Saga Domain. Known for its significant role during the late Edo and Meiji Restoration periods, the museum features items related to the Nabeshima clan, the ruling family of the domain, and the scientific and technological advancements fostered by the Saga Domain. The museum also features rich displays unique to Saga Prefecture, including the Ariake Sea's biology and geology, and Hizen-to swords. The Ariake Sea, with its tidal flats and nori (seaweed) cultivation, has nurtured a rich natural and cultural environment. The museum clearly explains the Ariake Sea's ecosystem and culture. Hizen-to are Japanese swords crafted in Saga Prefecture. The museum exhibits the manufacturing process, history, and famous swords of Hizen-to. The Saga Prefectural Museum is a valuable place to delve into the history and culture of Saga Prefecture. We highly recommend a visit.
