Sandankyo Gorge is located in the Shiba-ki River basin of the Ota River system in northern Hiroshima Prefecture and is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government. This approximately 16km-long gorge is a leading tourist destination in Hiroshima Prefecture, where you can fully appreciate the majestic nature and breathtaking valley scenery. Surrounded by deep green, the gorge offers a variety of beautiful landscapes throughout the year, from the fresh green of spring and the lush greenery of summer to the vibrant autumn foliage. Within the gorge, there are numerous highlights such as Kurofuchi Pond, Sarutobi Rock, Nidan Falls, and Sandan Falls. Well-maintained walking paths make it easy for visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll. Kurofuchi Pond, located deep within Sandankyo Gorge, is particularly impressive with its beautiful emerald green water. You can also take a boat trip on Kurofuchi Pond. Sarutobi Rock is a rocky area upstream from Nidan Falls. From here, you can get a magnificent view of Nidan Falls. Nidan Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Sandankyo Gorge, a breathtaking waterfall cascading down a approximately 20m high cliff. Sandan Falls is the waterfall that gave Sandankyo Gorge its name. It's a beautiful waterfall that flows down in three stages. There's also a restaurant called 'Kurofuchi-so' within the gorge, allowing you to enjoy a meal surrounded by nature. Kurofuchi-so serves dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. Sandankyo Gorge is perfect for those who want to spend some relaxing time surrounded by nature. It's approximately a 2-hour and 15-minute bus ride from Hiroshima Station. A large parking lot is available at the Sandankyo main entrance.
