Designated a natural monument of Okayama Prefecture, Daigo Sakura is a giant Edohigan cherry tree estimated to be 700 to 1000 years old. Standing tall on a small hill, its solitary and majestic form attracts cherry blossom viewers from all over Japan during its blooming season.
Its name originates from a legend that Emperor Godaigo, while on his way to exile on Oki Island, admired this cherry tree. With a height of 18 meters, a trunk circumference of 7 meters, a base circumference of 9.2 meters, and a branch spread of 20 meters north-south, its size is truly awe-inspiring.
The tree gained national recognition in the late 1980s, and while the increasing number of tourists once weakened its vitality, it has since recovered thanks to the treatment by arborists. In 2004, American pianist Ruth Slenczynska (then 79 years old) gave a performance under its fully bloomed canopy, adding another fascinating story to its legacy.
Street vendors selling local specialties line the surrounding area. Night illuminations create a magical scene different from the daytime view. Many events are held during the blooming season, so be sure to visit!
Daigo Sakura is more than just a cherry tree; it's a precious presence that allows one to feel the weight of history, culture, and the power of nature. Come and witness its magnificent presence for yourself.
