The terminal station of the Taisha Line, bustling with Izumo Taisha pilgrims. The retro wooden station building is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, a precious relic preserving the atmosphere of the past.
Overview
Old Taisha Station was the terminal station of the West Japan Railway Company (JR West) Taisha Line, located in Taisha-cho, Izumo-shi, Shimane Prefecture. The line was discontinued on April 1, 1990 (Heisei 2), but the station building, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, remains.
Old Taisha Station opened on June 1, 1912 (Meiji 45). On February 13, 1924 (Taisho 13), a single-story wooden station building modeled after Izumo Taisha was completed. It later became a bustling station for many pilgrims, even hosting the Emperor Showa's special train during his post-war visit, showcasing its rich history.
After the line's closure, the station building remains unchanged, preserving its original platform, station sign, and information boards. Photographs and documents depicting the station's past are also displayed inside.
Old Taisha Station played a crucial role in accessing Izumo Taisha, attracting many tourists. Izumo Taisha is located very close to the station, making it a perfect combined visit.
