Niu Kankobu Jinja Shrine is a historic shrine located in Kudoyama-cho, Itogun, Wakayama Prefecture. Situated at the foot of Koyasan, it was founded by the Great Master Kobo Daishi, Kukai. Known as the starting point of the "Machishi-michi," the pilgrimage path to Koyasan, it has been a center of faith for many generations. The shrine's founding is dated to 816 AD (during the reign of Emperor Saga), when Kukai, in establishing Koyasan, enshrined Kariba Myojin (the local deity of Koyasan) and its mother, Niutsuhime-no-okami, at this location, which served as the gateway to Koyasan. The shrine's name evolved over time, changing to Niu Shichisha Taisha, then Niu Jinja, before adopting its current name during the Meiji period. The tranquil atmosphere of the shrine grounds offers a soothing space where you can sense both history and nature. Ascending the stone steps, the vibrant vermillion main hall comes into view. Designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, its majestic presence captivates visitors. Behind the shrine, a viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramic views of Koyasan. Offering prayers for a safe climb at Niu Kankobu Jinja Shrine before ascending Koyasan is also highly recommended. Niu Kankobu Jinja Shrine, deeply connected with Koyasan, is beloved not only by history buffs and nature lovers but by many others.
