A historic lacquerware town with a beautiful streetscape of houses arranged like saw teeth.
Kuroe district in Hainan City, Wakayama Prefecture, boasts a rich history as a flourishing producer of Kishu lacquerware. It's said that during the Edo period, the town housed approximately 4,500 people. Kuroe's townscape is characterized by its uniquely beautiful and nostalgic houses arranged like saw teeth. This distinctive arrangement is believed to have been implemented for fire prevention and privacy. While the number of lacquerware shops has decreased, you can still find lacquerware workshops and traditional crafts throughout the town. Kuroe also has a sake brewery where you can sample local Japanese rice wine. Kuroe offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and a chance to relax and unwind. We highly recommend a visit.
