A mystical uninhabited island where history and nature intertwine.
Tomogashima is an uninhabited island located off the coast of Kada, Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture. It boasts a rich history, having served as the Yura Fortress of the former Imperial Japanese Army. Since the arrival of Black Ships, the island has been a strategically important location guarding Osaka Bay, leading the Kishu Domain to establish a Tomogashima magistrate under shogunate orders. Its importance grew further during the Meiji period, with the Imperial Japanese Army significantly expanding the Yura Fortress. Equipped with large cannons strategically positioned across the island and housing approximately 600 soldiers, the fortress remained inaccessible to civilians until the end of World War II. Now uninhabited, the island retains remnants of the former fortress, including gun emplacements and tunnels, making it popular among history buffs and urban exploration enthusiasts. Its abundant natural beauty is another major draw, with lush evergreen forests and well-maintained hiking trails. Hiking offers a chance to immerse yourself in the island's history while enjoying the stunning scenery. Tomogashima also provides a unique camping experience. A designated campsite allows visitors to enjoy the tranquility of camping on an uninhabited island, under a breathtaking night sky.
