Kimpu-senji Temple, located in Yoshino-cho, Yoshino-gun, Nara Prefecture, is the head temple of Shugendo, a unique Japanese practice of mountain asceticism, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is said to have been founded over 1300 years ago by En no Gyoja, and has been revered as a sacred mountain for centuries.
Nestled on the slopes of Yoshino Mountain, Kimpu-senji Temple is its central feature. The breathtaking expanse of cherry blossoms covering the mountainside is a sight to behold, attracting many visitors in the spring. Autumn brings a stunning display of autumn leaves, making it a beautiful destination year-round.
The highlight of Kimpu-senji Temple is undoubtedly the Zao-do, a National Treasure. This enormous structure, approximately 34 meters high and 31 meters wide, houses the Kongozō Zōō Daigongen deity. The temple also boasts a rich collection of valuable Buddhist statues and paintings.
