Enjoy breathtaking views overlooking the Tatsuno castle town and a charming historical garden!
Shūentei is located on the site of the upper residence of the Wakisaka clan, the lords of Tatsuno. From the garden, you can enjoy stunning views of Tatsuno castle town, Awaji Island, and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. The breathtaking vista is why this place was once called the "Shūen Gate," a name that inspired the current name, Shūentei. The term Shūentei is often used to refer to the entire upper residence site, including both the garden and buildings. Within Shūentei, the "Ukidō" is a tea room built in a Sukiya-style (a type of Japanese architecture) incorporating Shoin-zukuri (a style of architecture featuring a study) and situated over the Shinji pond. Designated as a tangible cultural property of Tatsuno City, it's a particular highlight of Shūentei. Next to Ukidō is "Rakan," a full-fledged tea room named by the 15th head of the Urasenke school of tea ceremony, Sen Sōshitsu. Rakan is a spacious tea room where you can enjoy tea while gazing upon Shūentei's garden. Adjacent to that is the "Goryōsho," a summer retreat built in the mid-Edo period for the Wakisaka lords. As one of the oldest structures in Shūentei, it offers a glimpse into the lives of the feudal lords of that era. Each building is surrounded by and integrated with a meandering or seated viewing Japanese garden. The gardens feature ponds, waterfalls, stone lanterns, and more, offering beautiful scenery throughout the year. Autumn's foliage is especially stunning, painting the grounds in vibrant reds and yellows, creating a magical atmosphere. Shūentei is not only a place to appreciate the Tatsuno castle town and nature but also a place to experience history and culture. Take your time and enjoy a leisurely stroll.
