A breathtaking collection of massive stone remnants used for Osaka Castle's stone walls, transporting you back 400 years to a time when the sounds of stone-cutting still echo. Its sheer scale is awe-inspiring.
Shodoshima Island has long been known as a source of stone, particularly high-quality granite. Tengu-iwa Quarry is the largest of these quarries. During the reconstruction of Osaka Castle, a significant amount of stone was quarried here and transported to Osaka. 666 seed stones and hewn stones remain at Tengu-iwa Quarry. Among them, the exceptionally large natural stone, "Dai-Tengu-iwa," is estimated to weigh 1,700 tons. It's hard to imagine the immense undertaking of quarrying and transporting these massive stones using the technology of that time. Exploring Tengu-iwa Quarry allows you to appreciate the skill and effort of the stone masons and the passion poured into the magnificent construction of Osaka Castle. The area surrounding Tengu-iwa Quarry boasts Shodoshima's rich natural beauty, offering a chance to enjoy a scenic stroll with stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea.
