Overview

Omi Jingu Shrine, located in Jingumachi, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, is dedicated to Emperor Tenji. It was established in 1940 on the presumed site of the Heian-era Otsu Palace, to which Emperor Tenji moved his capital from Asuka in 667. As the first emperor in Japan to install a water clock (rokkei), the shrine holds an annual Rokkei Festival on June 10th (Time Memorial Day), a tradition started in 1941. The grounds feature sundials and water clock replicas donated by various clockmakers throughout Japan, along with the adjacent Clock Tower Treasure Museum. Furthermore, in honor of Emperor Tenji, who composed the first poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets), the annual Meijin (master) and Queen title matches for competitive karuta are held there every January. Omi Jingu Shrine offers not only a glimpse into history and culture, but also a vibrant, exciting experience through competitive karuta. In recent years, it has gained fame as a filming location for the popular manga, anime, and film series *Chihayafuru*, attracting many fans. Ultimately, Omi Jingu Shrine is a captivating destination, blending history, culture, and the dynamic world of competitive karuta. It’s definitely worth a visit!
