Overview

Shoanji Temple is a Tendai Shinmyo-shu Buddhist temple located in Sakamoto, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Its mountain name is Zuiōzan, and its principal image is Amitābha Buddha. Tradition holds that Shoanji was originally built on the site of the Takanaho Palace, though the exact founding date remains unknown. After falling into disrepair, it was restored in 1486 (Bunmei 18) by Sugiwaka Moriyasu, a retainer of Asakura Sadakage of Echizen Province. It's said that Moriyasu then entered the temple, giving it its name. Shoanji boasts several highlights. First, the guest hall, designated as an Important Cultural Property, is said to have been built using lumber from Fushimi Castle and is known as the Momoyama Goten (Momoyama Palace). The fusuma (sliding doors) and kōtaka shōji (high-waist sliding screens) inside are decorated with flower-and-bird paintings in the Hasegawa school style, offering a glimpse into the splendor of the era. Next, the early Edo period dry landscape garden depicts the Mandala of the Descent of Amida and His Host. The beautiful scenery unfolding in quiet contemplation soothes the visitor's soul. Furthermore, Shoanji houses an eleven-faced Kannon Bosatsu standing statue, also designated as an Important Cultural Property. This statue, traditionally believed to have come from Sōfuku-ji Temple, dates back to the Heian period. Made famous by Yasushi Inoue's novel *Hoshi to Matsuri* (*Stars and Festival*), this statue continues to captivate many. Shoanji is a beautiful temple where history and nature harmoniously coexist. Enjoy a tranquil and relaxing time in its serene atmosphere. We highly recommend a visit.
