A shrine featuring an octagonal stone pillar called "Houiishi" (Direction Stone), said to grant wishes when touched.
Sarutahiko Shrine is dedicated to Sarutahiko Okami, the god of guidance featured in Japanese mythology. Located very near Ise Grand Shrine's Naiku (Inner Shrine), many people visit it while visiting Ise Grand Shrine. Sarutahiko Okami is the god who guided Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Amaterasu Omikami, to the earth and is also considered the tutelary deity who later developed the upper reaches of the Isuzu River. Therefore, Sarutahiko Shrine is believed to offer blessings for guidance, traffic safety, and warding off evil influences, attracting many worshippers. Within the shrine grounds, there is an octagonal stone pillar called "Houiishi" (Direction Stone). It's said that touching it while making a wish will grant that wish. The main hall enshrines Sarutahiko Okami and has a very solemn atmosphere. Furthermore, within the grounds is the Sarume Shrine, dedicated to Amenouzume-no-Mikoto, who interacted with Sarutahiko Okami during his descent from heaven. She is also worshipped as the goddess of performing arts. Sarume Shrine is built opposite the main hall of Sarutahiko Shrine, and together they are worshipped as the divine couple of Sarutahiko Okami and Sarume-no-Mikoto. Sarutahiko Shrine is a tranquil space surrounded by abundant nature, perfect for those seeking peace and quiet. We highly recommend visiting Sarutahiko Shrine along with your visit to Ise Grand Shrine.
