Overview
Kourankei is a valley carved by the Haga River, a tributary of the Yahagi River, located in Ashike-cho, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture. Known for its autumn foliage and katakuri flowers, it becomes a bustling tourist destination in the fall.
Kourankei's history dates back to 1634 (Kan'ei 11), when San'ei Oshō of the Koseki-ji Temple in Ashike planted maple and cedar trees along the approach to the temple from the Haga River. Subsequently, many more maple trees were planted and walking paths were created by local residents, resulting in the scenery we see today.
The Taigetsukyo Bridge, an iconic symbol of Kourankei, was named in 1953 (Showa 28). After three replacements, a new bridge was constructed in 2007 (Heisei 19).
The name "Kourankei" (Fragrant Mountain Valley) originated in 1930 (Showa 5), when the then-priest and mayor requested a name from the president of the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun during his visit. The name was inspired by the description: "The fragrant breeze from Mount Iimori, filtering through the green maple leaves along the Koseki-ji approach, carries the scent of the mountain air across the Haga River. This mountain air is, in essence, the spirit of the mountain."
Kourankei offers beautiful scenery throughout the year. Spring brings a carpet of blooming katakuri flowers, while autumn showcases vibrant fall colors. You can enjoy leisurely strolls along the valley, admire the views from the bridges, and much more.
Kourankei is cherished by many as a place to connect with nature and find peace.
