The "Yume no Tsubo-bashi" (Dream Suspension Bridge) spanning the emerald green dam lake offers an unforgettable, thrilling experience. The surrounding lush nature is another major draw.
Located in Kawanehoncho, central Shizuoka Prefecture, Sumatakyo Gorge is a breathtaking 16km-long valley sculpted by the Sumata River, a tributary of the Oigawa River. This unique landscape, formed by the uplift of the Akaishi Mountains and the intense erosion of the Sumata River, creates a majestic and mystical scenery. The gorge boasts largely untouched nature and was designated as a protected area of the Oigawa River source in 1976. Remnants of the region's once-thriving forestry industry, such as the Hiryu Bridge and walking paths, remain and have been developed into scenic trails. Selected as one of Japan's 100 best walking paths in 2002, it’s a popular tourist destination. Particularly famous is the "Yume no Tsubo-bashi" (Dream Suspension Bridge) spanning Lake Oama. This approximately 90m long and 8m high suspension bridge offers panoramic views of the emerald green lake and surrounding mountains. The bridge features wire railings, adding a thrilling element to the crossing experience. The number of people allowed on the bridge at once is limited to 10, so one-way traffic may be implemented during peak hours. In 2012, it was selected as one of the "Top 10 Walking Suspension Bridges in the World to Cross Before You Die" by TripAdvisor's "Baguette List", highlighting its popularity. Sumatakyo Gorge offers beautiful scenery throughout the year, from vibrant greenery to stunning autumn foliage. Besides hiking and trekking, visitors can enjoy various activities such as onsen (hot springs) and fishing. It's the perfect place for those seeking to refresh their mind and body in serene nature.
