Located at an altitude of 900m, this is Japan's highest show cave! Experience the breathtaking artistry of nature's mysterious stalactites and stalagmites.
The Hida Great Show Cave, located in Himeno, Tanigawa-cho, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, is a approximately 1,800m long cave situated at a breathtaking 900m above sea level. Discovered in 1965 and opened to the public on June 15, 1968, it's renowned as Japan's highest-altitude show cave. The cave's interior is dramatically lit, showcasing a mesmerizing array of stalactites and stalagmites in various shapes and sizes. The "Ryugu no Yakei" (Dragon Palace Night View) in the first cave is particularly spectacular, featuring helictites, straw stalactites, and other formations beautifully illuminated. With an average temperature of approximately 12℃ inside, it's a popular summer retreat. Adding to its allure is the cave's geological history: it was formed in what was once an ocean floor 250 million years ago. Numerous fossils of crinoids and fusulinids have been discovered within the cave, attesting to its underwater origins. The Hida Great Show Cave offers a remarkable opportunity to experience the mysteries and history of nature. We highly recommend a visit. It's also recommended to visit the adjacent Ohashi Collection Museum, which houses a valuable collection of art and antiques gathered by the cave's discoverer, So-kichi Ohashi. Make the most of your day by exploring both the Hida Great Show Cave and the Ohashi Collection Museum!
