Gifu Nagara River Cormorant Fishing is a traditional fishing method with a history spanning over 1,300 years, designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Ukyou, skilled cormorant fishermen, utilize techniques passed down through generations to expertly guide cormorants in catching fish. Ayus (sweetfish) with distinctive scars around their necks from the cormorants' grasp have been prized since ancient times and even presented to the Imperial Court.
The Nagara River cormorant fishing unfolds against the backdrop of a starlit night sky, with flickering torchlight illuminating the water's surface, creating a truly magical atmosphere. The ukyou's calls echoing in the tranquil night, along with the sounds of cormorants catching fish, will soothe your soul and create an unforgettable memory.
Enjoy various ways to experience the cormorant fishing: aboard a sightseeing boat for a close-up view of the ukyou's skills, or from the riverbank. Sightseeing boats also offer dinners featuring local ingredients and access to museums showcasing the history of cormorant fishing.
Consider unwinding at Nagara River Onsen (hot springs) after a day of experiencing this rich tradition, for a truly luxurious and memorable trip.
